Heterodermia leucomela
DIAGNOSTIC FEATURES: Scraggly growth; soralia on lower surface usually on rolled and twisted lobes; long cilia; medulla K+ yellow turning red (salazinic); compare with H. appalachensis, yellow undersurface which is K+ yellow, not recorded from Ohio.
ECOLOGY: Rather rare in the Appalachian Mountains; in Ohio mostly older records showing a southern tendency, records from 8 counties; on bark exclusively.
