DIAGNOSTIC FEATURES: Appressed; mostly marginal soralia; medulla pale to deep yellow; flat or turned down tips; pruina like spots of icing on tips; rhizines mostly black to the lobe tips; cortex UV+ golden yellow; compare with P. sorediata which has lobe tips concave and turned up, rhizines usually light-colored at margins and visible from above, pruina spattered on lobe tips, and UV-.
ECOLOGY: Widespread in the southeastern US; common in southern Ohio, uncommon farther north, usually on bark, rarely on rock.
