DIAGNOSTIC FEATURES: NIS; medulla white, KC+ red; undersurface black; compare with Myelochroa galbina, which is ciliate, with yellow medulla, KC-, and with Physcia and Imshaugia spp., which have much narrower lobes and pale undersides.
ECOLOGY: A common southeastern US species; scattered in Ohio but more common in the south; on bark exclusively, particularly hard-barked trees like hickories and the red oak group.
