About these images. The images that display here are 750 pixels wide or, in the case of “portrait” aspect ratio ones, 650 pixels tall. To download one of these small-sized images, right-click and navigate (typically “open in a new window”) to the URL for that image, and then right-click that to (typically) “save image as as.”

Downloading higher resolution images. The images that display here are scaled-down versions of high-resolution ones that reside on the server. They are 2400 px in the longest dimension. To download these, navigate to the image as described above, and then change the URL address to the full-size one by deleting the final portion of the file name which indicates its size. This is usually “-750×500“and deleting that portion of the address with cause large image to open in your browser, which then can be downloaded as described above.

About the original images. Although the higher resolution images are 2400 px in the longest dimension, almost all of these images are archived both as jpegs that are about twice that pixel density (i.e., approx. 5000 px in the longest dimension), and also as raw images of the same resolution. Accordingly, precise control of white balance, saturation, contrast, etc., can and should be performed. Many of the close-ups were produced using image-stacking to increase depth of focus. That effect can be moderated if it seems too extreme.
