Had fun yesterday at Camp Oty Okwa in south-central Ohio searching for (boo, hiss) hemlock wooly adelgid. Afterwards visited a field of huge sandstone boulders and terraces, which this moss calls home. It's Hutchin's ulota moss, Ulota hutchinsiae, a species that is rare in Ohio. Unlike the very common Ulota crispa, which has curly leaves and grows on trees, this one has straight leaves and grows on rock. #ohiomosses #ohioplants #ohiobotany #bryophytes #gametophytes #sporophytes #bobklips

Something you don't see very much in Ohio is woodland-growing Sphagnum moss. This is at Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve in Licking County. It's S. capillifolium I believe, but may be S. subtile. #ohiomosses #ohioplants #ohiobotany #bryophytes #gametophytes #bobklips

Beard lichen, Usnea strigosa, is slowly recolonizing areas of Ohio where it hasn't been seen in years. This seen today on a honey-locust in Madison County, in the central part of the state. (Honey-locust seems to be a lichen magnet!) #lichens #usnea #fruticoselichens #ohiofungi #bobklips

Most Dicranum species in Ohio (we have twelve species) have narrow leaves, and are often called "broom mosses." This one, Dicranum spurium, seen yesterday on a sandstone has exceptionally broad leaves and a rather cute ruffled look. #ohiomosses #ohioplants #ohiobotany #bryophytes #gametophytes #bobklips

A common and abundant carpet moss on logs, with a feathery branching pattern and leaves that are sickle-shaped and swept to the sides of the branches, this is Hypnum curvifolium as seen yesterday March 4 (I marched forth to see it), 2018 in Licking County, Ohio. #mosses #hypnum #ohioplants #ohiobotany #bryophytes #sporophytes #gametophytes #bobklips

Anomodon is one of the few moss genera to have different species occurring together in mixed clumps. These two are Anomodon rostratus and Alabama Judge Roy Moore's favorite moss, A. minor. This is "poodle moss," Anomodon attenuatus. My guess is it's the most abundant moss in Ohio. This is how it looked a few days ago in a limestone-rich woods in Greene County, Ohio. #anomodon #moss #bryophytes #ohioplants #ohiobotany #gametophytes #bobklips

Sphagnum leaf through a microscope. You can see why sphagnum holds water so well. There are two types of cells, Large dead empty ones with big holes (pores) in them, that absorb water, are surrounded by a network of smaller, long and narrow, green cells. #mosses #bryophytes #sphagnum #ohioplants #ohiobotany #cryptogams

Brachythecium laetum is a common and beautiful carpet moss. Identification can be trick though –it requires a compound microscope and careful comparison with similar species. #brachythecium #moss #ohiobotany #ohioplants #bobklips #bryophytes

It warmed up and rained a bit, so the mosses on the little brick wall in front of my house are happy. These are Orthotrichum pumilum (with sporophytes) and Syntrichia papillosa (the broad-leaves one with gemmae). #ohiomoss #ohiobotany
