Phaeophyscia adiastola
DIAGNOSTIC FEATURES: Black undersurface, narrow lobes (less than 1.5 mm wide), coarsely granular to isidioid marginal and terminal soredia; compare with P. orbicularis, which is nearest but has finely granular soredia and is rare in Ohio.
ECOLOGY: Widely distributed in the eastern US; common and widespread in Ohio, on mossy rock and tree bases. This species is fairly shade tolerant.
