DIAGNOSTIC FEATURES: Surface tomentum, at least at periphery; not cracked-areolate; compare with P. evansiana, which is isidiate and cracked-areolate, P. didactyla, which is sorediate, P. praetextata, which is squamulose, and P. aphthosa, which has hairy cephalodia.

ECOLOGY: Found over most of the US; wdespread in Ohio, the commonest Peltigera that will be encountered; on soil, over moss, sometimes on decaying logs and over rock.
