Hypogymnia physodes
DIAGNOSTIC FEATURES: Inflated lobes; sorediate with soralia bursting from lobe tips; undersurface black, bare of rhizines; medulla KC+ red; compare with Anzia colpodes, with dense black rhizines below.
ECOLOGY: Widespread in the northeastern and mountainous portions of the US where it is very common; mainly eastern Ohio, with records from 19 counties; on bark or old wood.
