Collema is characterized by its foliose, gelatinous (when wet) thallus, lacking a true cortex and medulla, bith rather homogenous throughout; usually olive brown to blackish, dull, with a photobiont of cysnobacteria. North America hosts 35 species while 10 have been recorded from Ohio.
