Anaptychia palmulata
DIAGNOSTIC FEATURES: Dark color; densely lobulate; NIS; pale undersurface, corticate; both cortex and medulla K–; compare with Heterodermia squamulosa, light gray color, K+ yellow, and Phaeophyscia squarrosa, smaller size and non-fibrous cortex.
ECOLOGY: Common in the eastern US; modern records indicate an eastern and southern distribution in Ohio, older records somewhat more widespread; occurs mainly on tree bases and mossy rock.
