Helodium paludosum at Defiance County, Ohio. June 11, 2011.

How to recognize Helodium paludosum: This mat-forming pleurocarp has very pinnate branches, with oblong acuminate plicate or striate leaves with a single costa ending near the tip of the leaf and abundant filiform branched paraphyllia on the stem and branches. It differs from the other Helodium species found in Ohio by the prorate cells with the top end of the long cells protruding at the back of the leaf, and not with a central papilla in the cell.

Where to find Helodium paludosum: Look for this species in swamps, marshes and wet meadows on wet soil or logs or branches.
