INTRODUCTION TO MOSS IDENTIFICATION
6. Leaf features used in moss identification. The illustrations in this section are
derived from two of the recommened moss ID manuals, and are included
for educational puroposes and as examples of the benefits of
owning these books, and hopefully not as instances of unauthorized use
of copyrighted material that would attract the attention of the esteemed counsel for
Wm. C. Brown or Columbia University Press. The pictures on the left
hand panels show a general array of leaf features from Conard, Henry S. and Paul L. Redfearn, Jr. 1979. How to know the mosses and liverworts, 2nd ed.
Wm. C. Brown Co. Dubuque, Iowa. On the right are examples of
specific mosses displaying particular leaf features from Crum, Howard, and Lewis E. Anderson. 1981. Mosses of Eastern North America: In Two Volumes. Columbia
University Press, New York.
